Jordan Lawlar is heading to the big leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks again according to Arizona Republic reporter Nick Piecoro.
The No. 4 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s rankings and No. 1 in Arizona’s system is ready to stay this time. The snakes sit at 21-20 in fourth place in the NL West. Arizona is set to take on the San Francisco Giants tonight to open a three game road series.
Lawlar had 34 plate appearances in 2023 as a late call up and was on the postseason roster. His numbers weren’t great, posting just a .134 average.
Since then it’s been a long journey for the now 22-year-old infielder. He battled multiple injuries in 2024, so he needed more at bats in AAA Reno this year. That was what Mike Hazen and Torey Lovullo wanted, and he’s taken advantage of that time. Lawlar played great in Triple-A, batting .336 with a .995 OPS, third best in the PCL in 169 total plate appearances.
You’t can’t run from the Law 😤
Jordan Lawlar has been named the PCL Player of the Month by @MiLB after he hit .408/.487/.749 and led the PCL in runs scored (31), hits (42), total bases (77), extra base hits (21), OPS (1.235) and slugging percentage in April 🔥 @Dbacks |… pic.twitter.com/AIfj3qltnO

On Sunday, manager Torey Lovullo confirmed what a role could look like for Lawlar when called up. He confirmed that he believes 3-4 starts a week is more than enough to get him comfortable.
The way Lovullo plans to use him is as a super utility infielder, getting starts at 3B, SS, and 2B to spell days off for Geraldo Perdomo, Eugenio Suárez, and Ketel Marte.
Expect most of Lawlar’s starts early on to come at second base, with Marte getting more DH opportunities. Perdomo and Suárez are two players that prefer not to have days off, so it’ll be interesting to see how Lovullo manages that. Maybe Geno gets more days at DH? I still don’t see Perdomo getting more than a day or two off a month unless Lawlar is clearly outplaying him.
Plus, just having one of the three infielders DH most days will take away at bats from Pavin Smith and Randal Grichuk. That doesn’t appear to be ideal for this team yet. But at the end of the day, Lovullo wants the most amount of “impact players” to play everyday.
Lawlar is expected to become one of the best players on this team eventually. For this season, it appears the D-backs just need him to provide a spark as a utility guy. Tim Tawa and Garrett Hampson haven’t been able to do that.
One thing is certain though, Mike Hazen and crew hope that Lawlar is here to stay with the big league club.
