Records Broken, Statements Made in Week 6

Record-Setting Rattler

What were you doing on your 18th birthday? If I know me (and my family), I was probably enjoying a nice Italian meal at Oregano’s surrounded by my three brothers, boxing each other out for the last of the cookie skillet. Spencer Rattler was setting the Arizona career passing yards record. Tomato, tomahto….

Congratulations to Spencer on an already incredible high school career. Looking back at a post Eric Sorenson put together after Rattler’s first start as a freshman, Coach Zupke said the future was bright for his now-four-year starter. Ding, ding.

Colts On The Run

I was at the Casteel – Higley game on Friday night, and the Colts were quite impressive in their 56-24 win over the Knights. The offensive line was up to the challenge against one of the best, if not the best, defensive line in the state. It’s clear that it takes about half the defense to bring down receivers Zach Nelson and Brandt Goodwin, and Gunner Cruz will rarely put a pass in harm’s way. The Colts’ signal-caller said after the game that this was a marquee win in their first year in 5A. If the Colts can play the way they did Friday night, they could be primed for a deep playoff run.

Boulder Creek Shootout

Boulder Creek came away with a marquee win themselves against Chaparral on Friday, winning a shootout 47-43. Hendrix Johnson continues his impressive senior season with 160 yards and a touchdown. The Jaguars have put up at least 30 points in the last three games. The road doesn’t get any easier for Chaparral as they wrap up their regular season with O’Connor, Mountain Pointe, Pinnacle and Liberty.

Mesquite On The Rise

Don’t look now, but after Mesquite started the year 0-3, the Wildcats have rattled off four straight wins including a victory over Arcadia. In those four wins, sophomore quarterback Ty Thompson has totaled nine passing touchdowns, four rushing scores and no interceptions.

Valley Christian

Valley Christian snapped a three-game losing streak with an impressive 35-28 win over Yuma Catholic, who looks to be a legitimate player in 3A. Valley Christian could make a real statement stringing this win together with a win next week over top-seeded Odyssey Institute.
