Ready To Strike: Contreras Focused On 2018

If you thought you were done hearing about the ridiculously talented and deep 2019 Arizona high school quarterback class…think again. Let’s introduce you to 6-foot-3, 190-pound North Canyon High signal-called Louis Contreras who is armed and dangerous for a big first full-season with Rattlers.

When Contreras leaves the field this summer, football rarely leaves his mind.

“I’ve been drawing stuff at home, drawing up plays against coverages,” the senior Contreras said to Sports360AZ.com. “New plays that we put in. Looking them up on Hudl and then practicing those plays when we get to the field, too.”

The field on Friday nights was a place the dual threat quarterback had to wait to see in 2017. Contreras was required to sit out the first five games of the season after transferring from Millennium High School in the west Valley following his sophomore year.

“Every one else was on game six and he was on game one,” North Canyon head coach Airabin Justin explained to Sports360AZ.com. “Now he’s getting more confident because of the repetitions he’s been getting.”

Contreras is also getting attention from college coaches around the country. The word is starting to get out on the Rattler quarterback with a smooth release and a high football ceiling.

“South Dakota State is really pushing for me,” he said. “I’ve talked to UNLV, Nevada and Utah State. NAU and ASU, as well.”

Despite last year’s small sample size (836 passing yards, seven touchdowns, five interceptions) the multi-sport athlete, who also plays basketball and runs track at NCHS, has the makeup college coaches crave.

“They like that he can throw on the run, he can move,” Justin said. “He’s very athletic. They like his arm strength. He’s been doing a great job and they like everything about him.”

When Contreras isn’t designing plays away from the field, you may find him designing clothes. It was a concept first hatched by he and a close friend during the Arizona #RedForEd teacher strike late last spring. The clothing line is gaining popularity around campus.

“We just kinda threw it together,” he said with a smile and shrug. “It’s pretty cool.”
