Randy Bennett is coming home.

The Mesa native will lead the Arizona State men’s basketball team moving forward after a quarter-century stint with Saint Mary’s.

In 25 years, the Gaels made the NCAA tournament 12 times. Saint Mary’s also made the tournament in each of the last five years.

Bennett’s teams are known to play defense at a high level and play a methodical offensive style. He has utilized the European talent pool multiple times over the years, particularly players from Australia.

Bennett replaces Bobby Hurley, who spent 11 seasons with the Sun Devils. Arizona State opted not to extend his contract, which expires this summer.

Bennett helped build the Saint Mary’s program from the ground up and made them a tournament regular in the West Coast Conference, often going head-to-head against Gonzaga in the conference tournament finals. Gonzaga is leaving for the revamped Pac-12 this summer.

Randy is the son of Mesa Community College great Tom Bennett, who accumulated 442 wins over the course of 19 years.
