The up-and-down marriage between the Arizona Cardinals and Michael Floyd ended Wednesday afternoon when it was announced the team released the wide receiver just days after his DUI arrest in Scottsdale early Monday morning.
The 27-year-old Floyd, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free-agent at the end of the season, was having an inconsistent season before the incident Monday morning where he found reportedly fell asleep at the wheel with his foot on the brake of his running 2017 Cadillac Escalade. Police said it took three times to alert Floyd.
The Cards had stayed mum on the situation until more facts came forward. Wednesday they somewhat addressed the situation for the first time.
“Obviously, we made some roster moves,” Bruce Arians said of Floyd’s release to the assembled media Wednesday. “You can read about them. I’m not talking about them…I really don’t want to talk about it.”
“It’s a tough day,” starting quarterback Carson Palmer said of his now-former teammate. “Mike’s a close friend of mine, an off-season golfing buddy. A workout partner, so it’s tough. I believe in Mike. I hope for nothing but the best for Mike and look forward to seeing what he does with the next opportunity he gets.”
In nearly five seasons with the Bird Gang the former Notre Dame star and 2012 first-round pick caught 242 passes for 3,739 yards and 23 touchdowns. 2016 was pacing to be his worst since his rookie season. Through 13 games he hauled in 33 receptions for 446 yards and four touchdowns. Floyd’s erratic play had become common frustration among Cards’ fans and coaches.
Arizona also announced they signed wide receivers Jeremy Ross to the active roster and Marvin Hall to the practice squad, respectively.
