Yasmany Tomas was never given an instruction manual when arrived to Salt River Fields to report to spring training.
Sure, the sweet-swinging Cuban who the Arizona Diamondbacks inked to a six-year, $68.5 million deal back in November had a general idea of what to expect playing Major League Baseball and adjusting to life in the United States but the transition is usually easier said than done.
Tomas was no different.
“It’s a process,” MLB Network/MLB.com insider Jesse Sanchez told Sports360AZ.com Monday morning discussing a recent interview he did with likable, fun-loving Tomas. “He said, ‘it’s not like I can jump to the highest level in one day and face the top pitchers every single night and just expect to dominate.'”
He may not be dominating but the 24-year-old has proven he knows how to hit against the best arms in baseball. Tomas has also been a pleasant surprise in another area.
“He’s obviously pretty athletic,” Sanchez said. “He’s lost weight and can move around the infield and move around the outfield. He’s been a pleasant surprise.”
What has also been somewhat of a bonus for the Diamondbacks is Tomas’ all-around skills and approach at the plate. Known mostly for his power in the Dominican Republic, the 6’1, 230-pounder has shown the ability to deliver in many different ways offensively.
“I think people expected more home runs,” Sanchez explained. “The pleasant surprise to a lot of people I think is how good of a hitter he is. He always gets on base, drives in runs.”
Going into Monday’s series opener against the Dodgers the Havana native is second on the team hitting .315. Tomas is also fourth in hits (64) and doubles (12). He moved to right field following third baseman Jake Lamb’s return from injury.
