In a wide open 4A division state tournament, the sixth-seeded Mesquite Wildcats are conference champions.
Led by quarterback Ty Thompson, who threw three touchdowns and a Mesquite defense that helped slow down a potent Desert Edge offense, head coach Scott Hare and the Wildcats took down the Scorpions 28-23 on Friday night.
Playing in their sixth game that was decided by a touchdown or less, the Wildcats were able to weather a comeback from Desert Edge in the second half, and a Jordan Wollangk interception helped seal the victory and state title.
