In human performance, our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors all play a role in winning or losing… One of my sayings is, “Athletes must dig down deep in the heat of competition to win; People must dig down deep in the game of life to succeed. The deeper we dig the higher we soar.” But, what’s down there when we are brave and courageous to dig down deep?

We are not our thoughts, and we are not our behaviors, or performance, because our thought can be distorted, and our behavior can be dysfunctional… Our biological, physiological, and spiritual existence is our sensations, feelings, and emotions…

Most people – including athletes, military personnel, and first responders – are role modeled, coached, and trained to survive by being emotionally cut off to protect themselves in highly stressful situations, which can also block and hinder their performance… For example, not sensing or feeling and listening to our intuition can lead to self-sabotaging and self-defeating behavior…

Guilt and Shame fuel anger and sadness, anger and sadness fuel anxiety and depression… Guilt is “I did bad”, or I was irresponsible from not being mindful, awareness, present, and connected… Shame is “I am bad”, or I was unaccountable from not setting healthy boundaries with myself and others…

I’m not talking about carried guilt and shame which toxifies my own guilt and shame… That’s a different conversation for another time… I’m talking about our own healthy guilt and shame rooted in our humanity of being perfectly imperfect…

The more responsible I am for my thoughts, feelings, and behavior, the less guilt I feel… The more accountable I am for my behavior, feelings, and thoughts, the less shame I feel… The less guilt and shame I feel, the more peace and harmony I feel… The more peace and harmony I feel, the more joy and passion I feel… or the more I’m in the zone or finding flow to perform at a high level…

Being responsible and accountable doesn’t mean being perfect or meeting high expectations… It means showing up mindful, conscious, aware, present, and connected to do the best that I can…
