Lewerke Keeping Close Eye On Pioneers’ QB Success

Pinnacle High School is a special place for Brian Lewerke who’s never forgotten where he came from. The now highly-decorated Michigan State junior quarterback still keeps an eye on his alma mater, despite being 2,000 miles away.

“I obviously pay attention to Pinnacle a ton,” Lewerke said to Sports360AZ.com’s Brad Cesmat via Skype Tuesday. “I saw they beat Horizon last week (smiling). Still haven’t lost to them yet which is awesome.”

What’s also been awesome for Lewerke is watching five-star senior Spencer Rattler and his talented junior back-up J.D. Johnson carry on the tradition of signal-calling excellence in Desert Ridge.

“He can do almost everything,” Lewerke said of the Oklahoma commit Rattler. “He’s an athletic guy. He’s probably going to break all my records if he hasn’t already. I can’t wait to see what he does in college, too.”

You’ll be hard-pressed to find another high school in Arizona with the past, present and future quarterback talent of Pinnacle.

Rattler, who sprained his ankle and was relieved by Johnson two weeks ago against Mountain Pointe, is expected back for Saturday’s out-of-state clash against JSerra Catholic (CA) in San Juan Capistrano. The junior Johnson completed 32-44 for 651 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions in Rattler’s absence.

Lewerke and his Spartans will take on Arizona State in Tempe Saturday night.
