Desert Financial Credit Union, former Marcos de Niza kicker Krysten Muir and the Arizona Cardinals have partnered to create the Arizona Breaking Barriers Student Athlete Scholarship.
Muir made national headlines as the kicker for the Padres in 2015-16, setting a record for points scored by a woman in the AIA and the first female player to score a point in an AIA state championship game.
In January 2021, Muir was in an auto accident and was partially paralyzed. There were questions whether she would walk again at the time of the accident. Months later, Muir was thriving in physical therapy and is now walking with a cane. While on her road to recovery, Desert Financial with a random act of kindness, providing support to the family.

In September, Desert Financial and the Arizona Cardinals also partnered to create a scholarship to recognize determined, resilient and impactful student athletes.
10 students will receive scholarships of $3,000 each, and there will be one scholar chosen by Krysten that receives the Krysten Muir scholarship. Each honoree will be recognized at a Cardinals home game.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be an Arizona high school senior graduating in the spring of 2022 that is a current athlete in an organized sport (high school, recreational league, club teams etc.) who plans to attend an Arizona college or university and hold a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.
