Saguaro’s Jacobe Covington Discusses Washington Commitment

Jacobe Covington Washington

The Saguaro secondary is one of the deepest and most talented position groups in Arizona high school football, and one of the leaders of that group has made his college choice. Four-star defensive back Jacobe Covington announced his commitment to the Washington Huskies on Saturday.

Covington holds 20 offers and had a top eight of Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, ASU, Arizona, Texas A&M, LSU and Nebraska.

Ultimately, Covington said Washington was the choice because of the growth he can find as a player and person under head coach Chris Petersen and defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake. Services like the “Built for Life” program, which help Husky football players prepare for life after the gridiron, jumped out to the Covington family when making this decision.

Saguaro head coach Jason Mohns calls Covington a “superstar and versatile defensive back” who is able to play cornerback, nickel and safety. Mohns also had this to say on Jacobe Covington:

“A lot of guys can play corner or nickel. Some guys can play safety or nickel. Not many guys can play all three. He’s being recruited by national Power 5 teams at all three of those positions. You’re getting a lot of position versatility in the defensive secondary. He’s a 10.9 100-meter guy who can roll. (Saguaro cornerback Kelee Ringo) gets a lot of the attention because Kelee is world-class but 10.9 100-meters is no joke. He’s physical and he’s a dog. He’s got dog in him. He competes. He’s chippy. He brings an edge to the game. You’ve got to have guys like that on your team. I think the other thing too is he’s still really raw. He is still growing as a player and a person. As he continues to do that, he’s continuing to get better and better.”

When he sat down with the Recruiting Roundup, Covington talked about Washington’s rich history of developing defensive backs, watching former Arizona high school defensive backs Byron Murphy and Dom Hampton thrive with the Huskies and the prospect of facing off against his current teammates in the Pac-12 in the coming years.
