The Sun Devils have their starter under center in place.
Transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt will start the Sun Devils’ season opener on August 31 against Wyoming, head coach Kenny Dillingham announced after practice.
Leavitt transferred from Michigan State this past offseason and had a strong spring, giving him the majority of first team snaps when the Sun Devils opened camp this August.
While Nebraska transfer Jeff Sims and veteran quarterback Trenton Bourguet pushed at moments throughout camp, Leavitt never really relinquished his spot.
Dillingham revealed that over the course of fall camp, Leavitt has thrown just two interceptions in team settings, which comes out to about 300 reps overall.
Offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo and Dillingham pointed to that ability to take care of the football as a big reason Leavitt is in the driver’s seat, as well as his ability to make strides in the new offense ahead of fall camp.
Over four games with the Spartans last year, Leavitt went 15/23 for 139 yards, two passing touchdowns and two interceptions.
