History was made twice this week for the Grand Canyon University basketball program.
On Tuesday, the men’s team won their first game against a ranked opponent, beating San Diego State 79-73.
The women’s team followed that up by notching their first win against a Power 5 opponent on Friday, taking down ASU 66-59.
It’s a huge feather in the cap for Molly Miller and her program and another great matchup between the Lopes and Sun Devils. Last year, in the Lopes’ most attended women’s basketball game in program history, ASU escaped with a 80-72 win in a game that was much closer than the score indicates.
It showed Miller her team could hang with a Power 5 program. A year later, they were able to get a win against one.
Four Lopes hit the double-figure mark in scoring, led by forward Olivia Lane with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Naudia Evans scored 15 points including two big three-pointers down the stretch to help close the game.
Jaddan Simmons scored 20 points for the Sun Devils. Trayanna Crisp totalled 18 points and five assists, and Jalyn Brown tallied 16 poitns for the Sun Devils.
The Lopes are 7-2 and will travel to Idaho and Liberty in the next nine days.
