GCU past, present, future. Happy trails Greg Schulte, Legacy future…

April 6th, 2024 the Final Four will be played here in our backyard.

So I swung by GCU on Tuesday for the first look at Bryce Drew’s squad. I like the job that Drew has done with the ‘Lopes. When I last saw the coach in March, his team walked off the floor in Denver, losing by 12 to Gonzaga in the NCAA’s. It was a heck of a run and a sign of progress.
Fast-forward to yesterdays workout and Drew has more pieces to work with than at any time in his pervious three seasons. He has some dudes. Transfers from Kansas, Oregon, Arizona State, and Louisville pass the eye ball test. Collin Moore, a guard from Georgia State, is going to be a problem for teams. Drew also has a solid group of returners off of last years squad. A great recipe for winning.

I’ve been wondering about the future of Grand Canyon University. Specifically, what conference will they be in down the road? For now the WAC is their home, but I have to believe that the brand that Athletic Director Jamie Boggs, President Brian Mueller and Jerry Colangelo have put together is looking at the landscape of realignment and wondering if the time is right for GCU to look at some serious change.

With Oregon State and Washington State considering their options in the next two weeks to move forward as a Pac-2, would they consider basketball brands like GCU and Gonzaga? Could the Mountain West become an option for the GCU brand? Factor in the Phoenix television market and one of the best game experiences in all of college sports, I’d think Grand Canyon University would be a terrific addition to either conference.
While President Mueller has stood firm in not adding football, is this the time to reconsider if it gets a deal done for the either the Pac-12 or Mountain West?…

Happy retirement to Greg Schulte! We worked side by side at KTAR from 1993-1998. We were the first radio broadcast team of the Phoenix Mercury. I was Greg’s fill-in as the Diamondbacks radio play by play announcer for a season too. A nice long postseason run would be a good ending for him behind the mic…

Fitz’s son is getting some varsity reps at Brophy. Will check him out Thursday night at Basha…

Transfer portal in high school football opens up with this weeks games. Some teams will have several starters who sat the first five. I feel for those players who lost their positions after five weeks of work. More than one high school coach has said that the mid-season starter doesn’t always bring success within a team. I agree…

Legacy Sports Park auction is next week. We had NFL Super-Agent Leigh Steinberg on the show last week expressing interest in a Steinberg Sports Academy on the property. A baseball Hall of Famer is looking at the project too…

Do we spend too much time paying attention to who’s offended versus what happens on the field of play? I don’t mind the Taylor Swift attention. If teenage girls are going to watch football(biggest demo jump over the weekend in NFL Games) then it’s good for business and it’s harmless. Do champion teams use the “disrespect” card all the time? Been doing this since I was 18, I haven’t seen many successful teams use that method for titles. Show up, shut-up, and play…
