GCU Beaten in WAC Title Game

Arizona Sports News online

LAS VEGAS – Until Grand Canyon University can figure out a way to beat New Mexico State, they will not be invited to the Big Dance in March. Saturday night proved the Aggies are still the team to beat as they overcame a slow start and pulled away from the fatigued Lopes 89-57 in the Western Athletic Conference Title Game.

GCU lost for the second year in a row to the Aggies (30-4), thus ending any hope of being in the field of 68 that will be announced on Sunday afternoon.

After GCU raced out to a eight point first half lead, New Mexico State settled down and stretched out to a fourteen point lead with 53 seconds to go before settling on a 10-point advantage at the half.

GCU would try to make a run to start the second half, but the Aggies put their foot on the throat and pushed down.

Dan Majerle’s squad finishes the regular season 20-13.
