Gabby Douglas “Hand over Heart” Not an Issue

Arizona Sports News online

Stop the madness!

A USA Olympic athlete is getting crushed on social media because she didn’t have her hand over her heart during the national anthem. Sometimes, you can’t make this stuff up. Gabby Douglass is wonderfully gifted gymnast, who just so happened to have a different way of celebrating than her teammates on the medal stand. Hand over your heart for the Pledge of Allegiance, hats off and stand at attention for the National Anthem, right? At least that’s what I was taught while growing up in Southern California. Perhaps there are different rules from different parts of our country, though I doubt it. She went to apologize on social media for something that doesn’t need apologizing…

One’s way of celebrating and showing respect during the National Anthem is up to that individual. I saw Michael Phelps cracking up while the Anthem played on Tuesday night during his gold medal celebration. No one said a peep about that. The same rules should apply for Gabby Douglas.
