Frank Vogel bringing ‘tough’ training camp to Phoenix

The Phoenix Suns feel like a new team. It is a new team. New ownership. New coach. New staff. Tons of new players.

The mentality towards a championship window feels new too.

Three days into training camp, and differences are being seen by us in the media and noticed by players and staff alike.

Players are running more, which is a potent ingredient for training camps that Larry Bird ingrained in Frank Vogel  during his tenure as the Pacers head coach.

“Working with Larry there was the expectation of always running the guys,” Vogel said. “Maybe because of that my training camps are still some of the toughest in the league.”

“This a training camp right here,” Devin Booker said while laughing. “We feel our legs. They’re heavy. They’re tired. They’re sore. That’s how it’s supposed to be this time of year.”

“My legs are super heavy,” Grayson Allen added. “This is great though we all need this.”

There’s still fun too. Vogel says the banter and trash talk is almost non-stop but in a healthy way.

The Suns want to bring home a championship to the city. Vogel, Booker, and others are keeping up with the Diamondbacks’ playoff journey.

Booker may pop out at a D-Backs game. Vogel is a big fan of Torey Lovullo’s champagne speeches and celebrations.

“I met Torey this summer and I’m a big fan of his approach,” Vogel said. “I could not be more happy for him, loved his post game speech… bring on the Dodgers!”
