It shouldn’t come down to needing help, but after 161 games, the Diamondbacks will be scoreboard-watching Sunday when they play the last game of the regular season against San Diego. Saturday night’s 5-0 loss to the Padres was a snooze fest at the plate for the Hometown Nine. Being no-hit over the first five by a Padres starting pitcher who came into the game with an ERA north of 5 wasn’t on my bingo card. Neither was A.J. Puk getting whiplash on back-to-back shots out of the park by San Diego in the 9th.
Brandon Pfaadt will be on the mound Sunday against San Diego, but it might be too late to save the season. 90 wins looked like the target to hit to make the postseason, but now, the Mets and Atlanta have three games left to play, while the Diamondbacks have just one while sitting at 88 victories.
