Story by Dominic Stearn
Every fall young quarterbacks burst onto the high school scene and make names for themselves. One standout quarterback who is starting to make a lot of buzz Deer Valley High School’s Rudy Gonzales.
The Skyhawks’ quarterback is dismantling defenses with ease, and Gonzales knows that he can’t do any of it without his teammates.
“I just love to see my team and I succeed,” Gonzales said. “Without the linemen’s help blocking for us, we wouldn’t be able to stand at the place we are right now. I like spreading the ball around. It keeps everyone alert to be ready to catch the ball and give them a chance. When I give my receivers a chance, they go off and get a 20-yard gain.”

Gonzales’ junior campaign is off to a tremendous start. In just four games, he’s thrown for 1,033 yards and 18 touchdowns, while also adding three touchdowns on the ground. Deer Valley is yet to score less than 36 points behind Gonzales and the stout Skyhawks offense.
To begin October, Gonzales put together his most impressive performance of the young season in Deer Valley’s explosive 63-35 win. He threw just 24 passes and totaled 386 yards and six touchdowns. To Gonzales, this felt just like any other game.
“Honestly I don’t really think about my stats while I’m in the game,” Gonzales said. “I just worry about executing the plays and getting the job done. However, it feels good to know that all the hard work that me and my teammates put in during the off season is paying off. It’s a tremendous feeling right now.”
Despite this great start to the year, Gonzales is still yet to get any college offers. However, he knows that his time will come.

“That’s a part of the process,” Gonzales said. “I have to keep working and keep getting better everyday. If I keep doing what I’m doing, God will put it in place for me and they will come eventually. I just have to stay humble and stay ready for anything getting thrown at me.”
Gonzales and Deer Valley will look to once again shine against Carl Hayden Community High School Friday.
