Coyotes extend Dave Tippett long-term

The Phoenix Coyotes announced big and important news on Friday morning as they have agreed to a five year extension with their head coach Dave Tippett.

Tippett has been the man in charge on the Coyotes bench for the last four seasons holding a  record of 156-96-42, including three appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He ranked second on the franchise’s all-time wins list and his .602 points percentage is the highest of any head coach in franchise history.

“I am thrilled to stay with the Coyotes,” said Tippett. “Don has done a very good job of assembling a great staff and group of players here and I like the direction we are headed. We’ve started to build a strong foundation and we are both looking forward to continuing to build a winning team here in the Valley and taking the next step as a first class organization.”

“We are very pleased to agree to terms with Dave to a long-term contract extension,” added Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney. “Elite coaching is required to win on a consistent basis and Dave is one of the best at his job in today’s game. His work ethic, attention to detail, communicative skills and patience make him an ideal fit with our group as we work to build a franchise capable of winning the Stanley Cup.”

Tippett, who’s contract was set to expire on June 30, has maintained success on the ice for the Coyotes despite on-going uncertainly of the organization’s ownership. Two seasons ago he led the team to the  first Western Conference finals appearance in franchise history.

Tippett is another important box to check off for the Coyotes. The first was extending Don Maloney. Next on the agenda is re-signing goalie Mike Smith.

Above all, the biggest box to check off is a resolution in the ownership situation.
