A Bugg’s Life: WFHS Senior Cornerback Thriving

Arizona Sports News online

Good things come to those who wait.

Tre Bugg always knew he was going to one day play college football.

Even when others scoffed at the idea of the then well under six-foot cornerback making an impact at the next level Bugg always believed. So did Williams Field head coach Steve Campbell who assigned the 5’4 sophomore to cover all-everything Saguaro wide receiver Christian Kirk for parts of the 2014 Division III Championship Game.

“That was the game that we knew he had ability,” Campbell said to Sports360AZ.com during a recent 7-on-7 summer tournament at ASU. “That’s when we knew that he was going to take every single play and play on a per-snap basis which is what you need a corner to do.”

Now the 5’11, 165-pound late-bloomer, who had three interceptions and seven pass defenses last season, is popping up on college radars around the country. Bugg has the “it” factor college coaches love. A smart, skilled playmaker on the field, as well as a serious student off it carrying a 4.39 GPA with aspirations of one day possibly entering the medical field.

He already holds offers from Army, Columbia, Northern Arizona, San Diego and South Dakota State among others.

“No plans for a decision yet,” Bugg told Sports360AZ.com. “It just feels great to know that college programs want me to play for them.”

You can expect even more to find their way out to the far east Valley to get a look at this rising prospect.

For now he’s focused on not only perfecting his technique on the field but becoming more of a veteran leader for a secondary which many expect to be one of the best in the state.

“I was starting as a junior but didn’t really have much of a leadership opportunity,” he explained. “So when I go out here I try to be a leader as much as possible.”

Although football and academics take up quite a bit of time

“I watch a lot of old tv shows,” Bugg said flashing a wide grin. “Boy Meets World. I used to love that show. Once Upon a Time. I’m actually watching right now.

Once upon a time.

Watch out…these dreams are about to become a reality.
