“It feels so good to be home!”
In her first Instagram post since February 5th, Brittney Griner expressed thankfulness to her loved ones, President Biden, and several others that have been instrumental in her return to the U.S.
She wrapped up her message with a big announcement: BG is back.
Griner plans to to re-join the Mercury for the 2023 season.
“I also want to make one thing very clear: I intend to play basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season, and in doing so, I look forward to being able to say ‘thank you’ to those of you who advocated, wrote, and posted for me in person soon,” Griner wrote.
The All-WNBA First Team center is coming back to a squad that made the playoffs for a league-leading 10th consecutive season last year.
As far as Phoenix’s ‘Big 3’ is concerned – Diana Taurasi told Arizona’s Family she’s returning for her 19th season and Skylar Diggins-Smith is currently pregnant with her second child (she has not indicated whether she will or won’t play in 2023 yet).
The rotation also includes the likes of Sophie Cunningham, Brianna Turner, and Diamond DeShields.
Regardless of how the year goes, the simple fact that Griner is coming back this quickly is a testament to her passion for the sport and dedication to her teammates, the organization, and the fans.
“Brittney Griner pulled on a pair of black Chuck Taylor sneakers, Phoenix Suns shorts and a T-shirt touting Title IX, and picked up a basketball Sunday for the first time in 10 months,” Griner’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas said. “Her first act was a dunk.”
The first of many to come.
Welcome home, Brittney.
These reunions are why @POTUS needs to continue to #BringThemHome.
