In recruiting, a commitment is supposed to go both ways between a player and a program.
The sad reality is…that doesn’t always happen.
But for Arizona State safety commit Xavier Skowron, it was the Sun Devils’ commitment to him during a time of uncertainty that made him feel comfortable pledging to the Kenny Dillingham program last week.
The class of 2025 Texas City safety has an injured toe, an injury that requires a procedure that’s happening on Monday. It’s not the best timing for a high school recruit. Skowron is heading into his senior year next fall, and this spring is an opportunity to show what he can do in front of visiting coaches.
“Some coaches want to see how I move and some want to see me work out in-person, which I’m not able to do right now.”
Skowron said he’ll be out until June or July.
“It probably scared some colleges away that I’m getting surgery,” Skowron said. “(Arizona State) wants to stick by me, stay by my side through the process and help me go through the process, which made them stand out and have me believe in them more.”
Skowron said he felt pressure to still try to compete this spring to show schools what he can do. But ASU’s willingness to look out for his well-being long-term stood out to the safety.
“It means a lot, and it actually does have an impact,” Skowron said. “It makes me think, ‘Oh, they want to take care of me.'”
Key members of that push for Skowron has been director of recruiting Isaiah Williams and defensive coordinator Brian Ward.
As Skowron continues the Texas to Tempe movement, he hopes to bring a hard-hitting mentality to the defense. He says he styles his game after former Washington safety Sean Taylor.
He discusses his decision and getting ready to early enroll at ASU in the videos above.
