Always Something University – C’mon Ray, Read the Room…

The definition of insanity…

What do the state legislature and board of regents make out of the job being done by ASU A.D. Ray Anderson? You may think that there are more important matters for our leaders to look into and examine, and you’d be right. But if you take the time to peel back the onion, I think you’d be on my side of the street.

Try watching Herm Edwards pop up on a television screen at ESPN with his four-million dollar goodbye gift from Anderson. How about Antonio Pierce going about his business in the NFL with Las Vegas with no reproscussion? As long as the NCAAA Infractions committee stays silent, we don’t know if more penalties are coming. Hearing “the case against Arizona State football is closed” hasn’t happened from that group, so I can only wonder if financial penalties are to come.

For the last three years I’ve heard the cry from the Arizona State fan base to “fire Ray”. He is still sitting in the chair projecting a “we have this under control” attitude. With the self-sanctioning of a bowl game being his latest gaffe, the president of the university sits silently in support of what continues to be the biggest dumpster fire in the Valley sports scene.

None of this helps Kenny Dillingham and staff do their jobs. The Sunday morning bomb drop by Anderson and his deputy certainly will make the trust between coach and front office interesting to watch. Dillingham spitting bullets and blood to the media on Sunday morning likely didn’t go over so well with those who are on Andersons’s side(yes, there are those people).

To me and others who I respect in the sports industry, Dr. Crow and Anderson simply don’t put football as the most important sport on campus. Anyone who denies this is simply on the points and pension train at ASU (get me my points and pension so I can retire). The days of having an A.D. who pays attention to every sport on campus in the same light are gone. FOX and ESPN rule the world with football money. Jumping conferences doesn’t happen for Olympic sports. Do I like it like this? Nope. It’s nothing personal, it’s just past time for Ray to go. No one is running to Andersons defense. C’mon Ray, read the room, step down…

Can’t wait to hear the postgame call-in show Thursday night after the Southern Utah game. Outta be a real hoot.
