Al McCoy going out on top, Aztec memories, Caitlin Clark, ASU names to know…

Arizona Sports News online

“Oh my gosh, they won” That’s all that came out of my mouth Saturday night as San Diego State won at the buzzer in the NCAA semifinals. I am in the alumni group of former play-by-play voices of the Aztecs. My years behind the mic were very thin on victories and thinner on fans that followed the program. You could’ve introduced the fans before the players. The late Tony Gwynn was one of my color analysts. Looking back, what a magical time…

If the Aztecs can do it, why can’t Grand Canyon University or Arizona State?…

Reminder, the Final Four is here next March! The mega sporting events never stop coming our way…

I sat in my office Wednesday night listening to Al McCoy from start to finish of the Suns game. My Sirius XM radio feed of the broadcast was about a minute behind the television feed, but every pass, dribble, shot was called without fail by Al, who turns 90 later this month.

Friday night, Al tapped me on the shoulder in the press dining room and said we “need to have lunch.” I’ve had a couple of lunches with Al through the years. Grown men line up for a signature or a quick story, and Al is always accommodating. Before tip-off against Denver, we had a great chat up at his broadcast position. Once again, fans were asking for items to be signed.

There will never be another, but he is leaving on his terms which is rare in the broadcast world, even for Hall of Famers. Al has been great to me over the last 30 years and has a legitimate shot at going out by calling a Suns title team in his last broadcast sometime in June. Happy for him.

Several readers have dropped notes suggesting that the Suns should let Al should do play-by-play on a Suns television broadcast before he’s done. It would be a very nice gesture by the Suns indeed. Stay tuned…

Three names that deserve more attention at Arizona State spring football. Anthonie Cooper, Leif Fautanu, and GIovanni Sanders…

Just two years ago, we had this controversy in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Two years later we have Caitlin Clark and the Women’s game getting huge television ratings.
