California QB Israel Carter Goes In-Depth on ASU Commitment

The Arizona State Sun Devils added their first commit to the 2023 recruiting class, and it’s a versatile playmaker who seems to just be scratching the surface in Corona Centennial quarterback Israel “Izzy” Carter.

Carter announced his commitment to the Sun Devils over finalists BYU, Colorado and Oregon on Friday afternoon.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound dual-threat quarterback also held offers from the likes of Kansas, Nevada, Washington State and UNLV, where he was recruited by current Sun Devil offensive coordinator Glenn Thomas

“He has a history of being around some great NFL quarterbacks like Matt Ryan,” Carter said. “He always said that they don’t bring a quarterback in to fit their system. They’re going to bring a quarterback in and change their system to whatever their quarterback is.”

Carter split time with Carson Conklin in a two-quarterback system. In 12 games, Carter, who styles his game on the field after Deshaun Watson, threw for 844 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception last year. He also rushed for 316 yards and eight additional scores on the ground while leading the Huskies to an 11-1 record. He has had a productive offseason, picking up multiple offers and winning the QB MVP at the Under Armour Next All-America Camp in Southern California recently.

He also wanted to get his decision made to help impact and recruit for the upcoming class. It’s fitting Carter comes from Corona Centennial, where linebacks Brandon Magee, Vontaze Burfict and Shelly Lyons were package commitments for the Sun Devils. The quarterback wants to replicate that pipeline again, already setting his sights on wide receivers Malachi Riley and Mikey Matthews and linebacker Chase Miller.

“(My friends and I) want to stay tight and stay together,” Carter said. “We don’t want to go our own ways becasue we feel like if we can stay together and lock in together as a team, we feel we can do something special at the next level. I’m definitely working on bringing some people with me.”
