The ASU-Cal game was canceled today due to COVID cases on the Sun Devil football team. According to Sun Devil Athletics, multiple players and coaches tested positive including head coach Herm Edwards.

“We have had to invoke the Pac-12’s football game cancellation policy for this week’s game,” ASU athletic director Ray Anderson said in a statement released by Sun Devil Athletics. “The cancellation of a game is very difficult to accept for all of us, but it is the right decision under the circumstances. In every case we continue to consider the health, safety and welfare of our student-athletes as our number one priority.”
“First, I want to say that Lia, the girls and I are fine and I will be back quicker than you can say ‘Forks Up!'” Edwards said in the same statement. “Second, even with the marvelous care our medical professionals have provided for myself, my staff and my team over the past few months the virus still found me. So, I encourage all of you to take this virus seriously, to wear a mask, practice physical distancing and get tested whenever possible.”
The PAC-12 also released their own statement, declaring this game a no contest based on their Conference policy. ASU didn’t have enough scholarship student-athletes to play.

Throughout the week, there was speculation that Cal wouldn’t be able to play because of its quarantine protocols enforced by the city of Berkeley. Now they will have to wait until Week 3 to open the season against Oregon State. ASU is scheduled to travel to Colorado next week, but that is up in the air now.
