Diamondbacks Roster Continues To Take Shape

Arizona Sports News online

There are plenty of questions swirling around the Diamondbacks roster as Opening Day is just four days away. With the injury to Steven Souza Jr. and Zack Greinke, both the lineup and rotation had some questions.

Two Rotation Spots Announced

Zack Greinke has been dealing with groin tightness and will not be ready for Opening Day. With Greinke out of consideration, Torey Lovullo announced left-hander Patrick Corbin will toe the rubber on Thursday against the Rockies. Robbie Ray will pitch second in the rotation. The remaining three spots and order have yet to be announced.

D-backs Add Deven

The Diamondbacks acquired Red Sox infielder Deven Marrero on Saturday as well. Marrero, a three-time all-conference shortstop at Arizona State, has the capability of playing all four infield positions. If Marrero make the big league roster, he provides some infield flexibility should Chris Owings see his role shift to right field while Souza is on the disabled list.

Yasmany Tomas

With the additions of Jarrod Dyson and Souza this offseason, the spots seemed limited for Yasmany Tomas on the big league roster. On Sunday, the Diamondbacks optioned Tomas to Triple-A Reno. Last year, Tomas appeared in 47 games, hitting .241 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs.

Salas Selected

The bullpen also continues to take shape with Fernando Salas, who was signed to a minor-league deal this offseason. On Saturday, his contract was selected to be a part of the 40-man roster.
