Mountain milestones, monumental moments mark Week 6 contests

Football contests in the White Mountains marked many moments that will be remembered for years. The biggest milestone was the 300th win for Blue Ridge Coach, Paul Moro, as the Yellow Jackets stung St Johns 45 -0 to make it a perfect 7-0 start.The 3-3 Redskins will host the Holbrook Redskins Friday night as Blue Ridge travels to Alchesay.

In 8 man football the Mogollon Mustangs lost their first game, 5-1, in a shootout with Scottsdale Prep 64-52.  The Mustangs Jimmy Adams threw for 4 TDs and ran for another in the losing effort.  Scottsdale Prep’s Nick Smith tallied 488 yards passing with 7 TDs.  Mogollon had been in the contest until the 4th quarter when Scottsdale Prep took off the gloves for good. Mogollon will try to right the ship as they travel to Mesa Prep.

Other contests saw Snowflake beat Winslow 43-17 in a perennial dogfight. The Lobos were led by Chase Walden who threw for 4 TD’s and rushed for one.  Winslow’s Kelly Wood compiled all of the Bulldog TDs as he crossed pay dirt twice. Winslow, 4-2, travels to Show Low and Snowflake, now 4-2, hosts Page.

Alchesay fell to 0-6 Friday as they fell to Miami. The Falcons will host Blue Ridge in Whiteriver on Friday.

The Show Low Cougars kept their record perfect at 6-0 after a Thursday night game that showed the Cougar fire power early. Quarterback Colby Maxwell threw 3 TDs in the first quarter as Show Low rolled Holbrook 52-8. The Cougs will host Winslow as the Roadrunners travel to St. Johns.

The Round Valley Elks traveled to Sanders Valley Friday night. The trip was worthwhile as the Elks bettered their mark to 2-4 easily beating Sanders Valley 63-14.  The Elks will open up the dome to host Window Rock Friday night. Another old 3A East team, the Payson Longhorns added a win to their record beating Sedona Red Rock 17-0. The Longhorns who will travel to Mingus Mountain on Friday are now 4-2 on the year.
