ASU imitates real game at first scrimmage

slider asu_football-scrimmageFull pads, full uniforms and almost full contact at the first Arizona State spring scrimmage under the command of Todd Graham. And it was everything that the new Head Coach expected.

“We did come out here and every one of them had the same socks on, the same shoes, so we at least looked like we knew what we were doing,” explained Graham after Saturday’s scrimmage. “We just got a lot of work to do from where we’re at right now. We’re exactly where I thought would be.”

The ASU defense definitely had the leg up at first. They came out with more intensity and executed more consistently.

The quarterback battle has been one of the main story lines of the spring practices. All three (Mike Bercovici, Michael Eubank and Taylor Kelly) got reps throughout the scrimmage. It seemed that Eubank got most of the reps and he also led the Sun Devil offense on their first scoring drive.

Runningback Deontre Lewis also played in his first full contact action since being shot a little over a year ago. He along with James Morrison got a majority of the reps with Cameron Marshall being on the sidelines in crutches after having ankle surgery.

“I’m proud of him (Lewis),” Graham stated. “He’s had to retrain that leg and retrain himself mentally and he just gets better and better.”

ASU will continue spring practices throughout the month of April, gearing up for their spring game on April 21 at Sun Devil Stadium.
