Sports360AZThe Pepperdine Waves came into Wells Fargo Arena Tuesday night and claimed a victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils. The final score was 66-60.
Pepperdine (2-0) led by as many as 14 points, and withstood a furious rally by Arizona State (1-1) in the second half.
Guard Joshua Lowery led the Waves with 13 points. He also had eight assists and five rebounds in his 36 minutes of play.
The Sun Devils were led in scoring by guard Trent Lockett, who had 23. He was 8-of-11 from the field, including 2-for-4 from 3-point range. He was very active on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds.
Pepperdine was on fire from downtown in the first half. They hit seven of their first nine from beyond the arc in the opening period. They ended up 8-of-11 for the game. Overall, Pepperdine shot 38 percent from the field to Arizona State’s 34 percent.
The Sun Devils weren’t nearly as successful from long range as the Waves were. They were just 7-of-27.
“We just never found any rhythm or sync offensively,” Arizona State head coach Herb Sendek said. “We have a great deal of work to do.”
“We knew athletically and physically they were gonna be better than us,” Pepperdine head coach Marty Wilson said. “We wanted them to have to rely on the three. Our guys bought in, and wewere successful with it.”
Forward Carrick Felix played 35 minutes and had 12 points and five rebounds.
“I just think we could’ve played a lot harder,” forward Carrick Felix said. “We just gotta start fresh. We gotta learn from this loss.”
The turnaround from this stinging loss is quick, as the New Mexico Lobos come to town on Friday night. They’re coming off a 52-point pasting of New Orleans in their season opener last Friday at the Pit.
They’ll take on their in-state rivals, the New Mexico State Aggies on Wednesday, prior to the matchup with the Sun Devils.
