Time to honor Colangelo and Wolfley, Caitlin Clark pricey ticket in PHX, Barkley retiring(Please…)

Arizona Sports News online

I took a couple of weeks to see my mom in Kansas, daughter in Chicago, and do a few other things with my bride. It’s good to be back.

Jerry Colangelo and Ron Wolfley should have sculptures erected in their honor outside of our sporting facilities. Disagree all you want, but you’d be wrong. Going in-depth on Colangelo would be pointless, but here’s a cliff-notes view. No, Jerry. Likely no Suns and no Diamondbacks. Arizona Sports News onlineThere was his leadership within the Valley sporting community as we grew in the 90s into the early 2000s. Even his detractors should humble themselves and acknowledge that having a Colangelo Way along Jefferson Street and a statue between the ballpark and arena should happen. Sure, Jerry doesn’t need it. He’s secured the spot as the most influential sports owner in Arizona’s history.

Ron Wolfley has done nothing but give up his skin and voice for the Cardinals. He has defended, represented, apologized, and criticized fairly and honestly. Putting Ron in the Ring of Honor should happen for the Cardinals while he is still broadcasting.  If Arizona Sports News onlineyou were to add up the number of games won and lost by our hometown heroes on the gridiron through the years, Ron has often had to spend his Mondays for four hours breaking down what went wrong rather than what went right. Ron was a Pro Bowl player on the field while the team was in St. Louis. Ring of Honor for Ron Wolfley can’t be debated…

I’ve been watching the Olympic swim trials this week and wonder how often I’ve heard the television reporter on the pool desk ask the question, “What can you say about the crowd?” I wish for the answer, “I’m swimming, I can’t hear them, so it’s really pointless to ask me.” Asking any competitor crowd noise questions might be the laziest way to get through an interview. I’d rather hear, “How wet is the water?”…

As Corbin Carroll goes…

If Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Eduardo Rodriguez return to the Diamondbacks with a vengeance, they can make a run at the Dodgers. The offense is suddenly coming together. Or is it that the Angels, White Sox, and Nationals stink?…

Caitlin Clark comes to the Valley on the 30th—a Sunday afternoon tip. Want a ticket? Here are a couple of seats that StubHub had today.

Do I think former Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo will outbid Mat Ishbia for a land deal in North Scottsdale? (um, no)That’s like believing Charles Barkley will retire from broadcasting after next season. All of us in the media space should write Barkley a check.  He’s made our jobs much, much easier and more enjoyable. Need to fill a sportscast on TV? Roll on Chuck on Inside the NBA, and there’s your content for the night’s show. Negotiations 101 by Charles, who will get a mega-mega TV  deal or open his own media company…

Happy to extend Jon Wilner and Wilner Hotline for another year on our platforms. Jon is the pro’s pro…

I dropped in on Arizona Wildcat head football coach Brent Brennan’s appearance at Living Room in Queen Creek last week. His message to the audience started with, “it takes 10-15 million dollars of NIL money to put together a team to compete”. About thirty minutes later he was sitting at a table speaking with noted Arizona State Sun Devil booster Nap Lawrence, who attended the event…

Scott Williams has left GCU as their television basketball color analyst. He was more than solid…

On our travels, my better half said, “When we stop in St. Louis, let’s go to a Cardinals game.” That is why she is my better half. 10 rows up the 1st baseline with a cold one and a $15 stacked high plate of BBQ. Amazing fans! Great experience…
